The Children's Book of Heroes
William J. Bennett (Editor) Michael Hague (Illustrator)
for ages 5-8

From Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature As Bennett says in his introduction, fortunate is the child who has heroes to look up to and learn from. He also makes it clear that the stars and superstars of today are frequently not heroes or particularly good role models. This collection of poems, stories and retold myths and folktales is a good choice for families either to read aloud or to enjoy alone. Kids will encounter several historical figures such as George Washington, Abe Lincoln and more contemporary ones such as Father Flanagan, Mother Teresa and Jackie Robinson. These people were heroes because the stood for something and they practiced what they believed. They gave back to the world more than they took. As with many of the stories, faith and a belief in God have all been important and have helped these individuals against seemingly impossible odds. Bennett also demonstrates through these selections that many heroes are just ordinary people who have compassion and courage. It is an uplifting book with lovely watercolors by noted artist Michael Hague.
