What are amphibians?
They are:
- vertebrates or animals with backbones
- able to live both on land and water when they are adults
- can breathe air through lungs
- have soft moist skins
- breed in the water
- lay eggs (covered with jelly) in the water among plants
- their eggs are called spawns
- their young are called tadpoles which have no legs (look very different from their parents)
- the tadpoles will slowly grow legs and leave the water – this change from tadpole to the adult is called metamorphosis
- adults like to live in damp places/habitats
There are three groups of amphibians:
- frogs and toads
- salamanders and newts
- caecilains
